Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark does for Elvira what UHF did for Weird Al and what Pee-wee's Big Adventure did for Pee-wee Herman. It's not as classic as those comedy movies, but Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is a total showcase for Cassandra Peterson to show off her wit and her enormous bosom as horror hostess Elvira. How funny this horror comedy actually is will depend on how much you dig Elvira's schtick. It's full of one-liner quips and sexual innuendos that are entertaining enough. In the film Elvira ditches her TV job to go collect her inheritance from her late great-aunt in the fictional town Falwell, Massachusetts (most likely named after televangelist Jerry Falwell). She pulls into the conservative small town and is instantly pegged for corrupting the morals of the youth. Elvira inherits a scary house from her great-aunt, along with a cookbook that she discovers is a book of spells. She begins using it on the town and soon the townsfolk accuse her of witchcraft and want to burn her at the stake! That's the basic plot of this mild horror comedy which is rated PG-13 and not too spooky. The film has a solid cast and is well directed by James Signorelli. Whether you were a regular watcher of Elvira's Movie Macabre TV show or are just curious about that Elvira lady, this movie is a fun display of Elvira's talents.
