Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

Johnny Mnemonic was not well received when it was released, but it plays better today thanks to a heavy dose of 90s tech nostalgia. Even if its story is muddy, the movie's visuals were still influential on future sci-fi hits like The Fifth Element (1997) and The Matrix (1999). It's set in 2021 with Johnny (Keanu Reeves) carrying 320 GB of important data in his brain as he faces off against the Yakuza and is helped by the cyberpunk group Lo-Tek. A lot of the film's aesthetic is dumpster dystopia which doesn't look great, but there's enough old school tech and CGI to keep your eyes visually stimulated. It has a solid supporting cast of Ice-T, Dina Meyer, Takeshi Kitano, Dolph Lundgren, Henry Rollins, and Udo Kier. The screenplay is weak and ventures into bad comedy at times, and Keanu Reeves' acting is not good, but it has a fantastic ending and it's worth seeing.
