Free Great Movies Review
Kurt Russell plays a less than competent husband named Jeff Taylor who has to track down his wife after she gets kidnapped by a band of desert hillbillies lead by J.T. Walsh in the American West. As written, Taylor makes decisions that range from cowardly to absurd in his efforts to get back his wife Amy (played by Kathleen Quinlan). The movie does have some thrilling sequences, but they would hit harder if Russell's character used logic in his attempts to outsmart the villains. For example Taylor is a terrible driver, who consciously chooses to drive his Jeep Grand Cherokee off a cliff into a river in one of the movies more ridiculous sequences. Co-writer Jonathan Mostow's script could've used some rewrites, but as a director Mostow is mostly up to the job (although the sun is at various stages of the day from scene to scene). Breakdown does build to a satisfying ending and is mostly an enjoyable road thriller.
