The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Low budget 70s horror classic that still terrifies. The grainy film stock and gritty low budget details add to the terror as a group of five friends traveling in a van make a bad stop and are terrorized by Leatherface and his demented family. The cast of relatively unknown actors all deliver, particularly Marilyn Burns as Sally Hardesty who provides convincing all out terror in the last act of the film. The first 30 minutes take place in the van as the group picks up a psychotic hitchhiker. When they ditch him you might think that this film isn't so terrifying after all. But once Leatherface shows up with his chainsaw the horror continues until the very last shot. Tobe Hooper's direction provides many classic horror images and slasher elements that have been imitated for decades. But The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is the original! Don't mess with Texas!
