Into the Night (1985)

A romantic comedy thriller starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer in the year 1985 should've been a lot livelier than this. Either Landis didn't direct Goldblum or he told Goldblum to play the role as square as possible because our dear Goldblum is practically sleepwalking through this performance. The plot is that he can't sleep so he heads out on a night of action and runs into Michelle Pfeiffer who smuggled in some precious stones through LAX. She's on the run from the Iranians who chase them across Los Angeles and it all climaxes back at LAX. But the comedy is mostly lame, the romance non-existent, and the thrills few and far between. The only thing keeping us alert are the many cameos and bit parts peppered throughout including David Bowie, Dan Aykroyd, David Cronenberg, Jim Henson, and about a dozen others. Composer Ira Newborn does his best to liven up the soundtrack. But the film is directed like an extended episode of a cheap 80s action TV show. Landis also inserts himself into the film as an Iranian who gets blown away, which is maybe him trying to atone for the sins he committed on his previous film Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).
