Standard 80s ninja action movie. Plenty of action, but because it's on a limited budget there's nothing here you couldn't see on TV. The relentless score by Michael Linn doesn't help as it sounds like it's from an 80s TV episode. Michael Dudikoff may be a hunk with some moves, but he has zero charisma when it comes to being an 80s action star. He plays an army dude on a military base where there's some corruption going on, but the script isn't even worth talking about. It's R-rated but it definitely feels like it's for kids. American Ninja was popular enough that it produced four sequels, two of which featured Dudikoff.
