Puppet Master (1989)

Puppet Master (1989) isn't a stellar opening to a horror franchise. For the most part the puppets don't even show up until 50 minutes into the movie. A group of psychics descend upon a haunted hotel called Bodega Bay Inn on the California coast. Paul Le Mat (who starred in American Graffiti and Melvin and Howard) isn't an exciting lead by the time 1989 rolls around. And the rest of the cast isn't much better. The puppets are the real stars including Blade, Jester, Pinhead, Tunneler, and Leech Woman. This direct-to-video Full Moon Feature offers some good stop motion animation and special effects, which are improved upon in the superior sequel Puppet Master II (1990).
