Lon Chaney

Lon Chaney was a true chameleon of the silent film era, a man who could transform his face into a thousand different guises. Born in Colorado in 1883, Chaney grew up in the world of traveling vaudeville, honing his craft as a performer. He was best known for his work in horror films, where he applied his own makeup for many of his roles, spending hours transforming himself into the characters he played. He played the hunchback Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera (1925). He passed away in 1930 at the young age of 47, leaving behind a body of work that remains impressive today. Many of his silent films are in the public domain and available for free on YouTube.
